However, this was no ordinary horse; it was an animal that no one had yet managed to tame. Alexander, however, was persistent; he did not let a few falls deter him, and he always treated the animal with humility, yet firmly. But even after many long months, he could not stay in the saddle\u2014until one noon he noticed that the horse was hiding its head between its front legs, as if shielding itself from the sun.\t\tSo he rushed over to it and forcibly lifted the horse\u2019s head toward the sky so that it would look directly into the sun. At that moment, the horse stopped resisting and let Alexander mount it, and they set off together on their first ride; from then on, they became an inseparable pair. Alexander loved his horse and valued it immensely. During one of his military campaigns, his weakened enemies stole the horse and took it to their camp, intending to blackmail him into retreating, but their action had the exact opposite effect. Alexander was so enraged that he declared that if they did not return his horse, he would burn all their cities to the ground. His enemies were so terrified that they returned the horse immediately. Around 326 B.C., Alexander the Great set out on a campaign to India. As they were crossing the Hydaspes River, Bucephalus was struck by an arrow. Before succumbing to his wound, he mustered all his strength to carry his master to the shore, where he died.\t\tAccording to historians, the animal was nearly thirty years old at the time. In honor of his horse, Alexander the Great had a city built in western India, which he named Bucephalia. Its location corresponds to the present-day location of the city of Kabul in Afghanistan. Alexander the Great never returned home from this campaign.
